Michael and I have created this website and blog so that we can provide updates on Mercer in a quick manner.  Please feel free to leave any messages for Mercer and the family here, we will be looking at this webpage frequently.  We appreciate all the prayers and thoughts that we have received and will continue to receive from all of you!!!!

By now many of you know that Mercer was in a car accident on Tuesday, October 27th around 7 in the evening.  From what we know the another car ran off the road and over corrected.  By over correcting the driver ended up in Mercer's lane.  It was a head on collision.  Mercer never lost consciousness.  The paramedics took him to NEGA Medical Center where he remained until Wednesday.  Mercer has several injuries which include a broken left wrist, broken and shattered right ankle, and shattered femurs in both legs ( just above the knee).  The orthopedic surgeons at NEGA said that his injuries were much to severe and that he needed to be transferred to a trauma surgeon who handles these type injuries on a daily basis.  He was transferred to Atlanta Medical Center on Wednesday.  Once he was examined by the orthopedic trauma surgeon it was determined that he needed immediate surgery on his left wrist.  Mercer underwent surgery on his left wrist aroun 8:00pm on Wednesday evening.  During the surgery his heart rate began to fluctuate and oxygen level dropped.  Thus causing great concern over his heart. 
He was placed in ICU for monitoring.  He has been completely sedated and is having help breathing with a ventilator.
Once the cardiologist ran more test on Mercer, he determined that he was stable enough to have the surgeries on his legs. They scheduled surgery for Friday morning at 7:30 am.  At the last visit this evening, we were made aware that he is now running a fever and that the surgery could be postponed, but we will not know anything until the morning.  The surgery on both his legs is one of many surgeries that will be performed.  We are praying that he will be able to have the surgery on his legs tomorrow morning.   We will post more as we get information.  

Friday, October 30th**  Today is Mercer's Birthday!!!!

It is 5:30 am and we are getting ready to head to the hospital.  Yeah, it really is Mercer's Birthday today!!!!

Mercer will be having the surgeries on his legs this morning.  The doctor explained that he has bruising to his lungs and heart.  The bruising makes his lungs and heart very fragile.  They will be putting a filter in to prevent any blood clots  or other "debris" from entering the lungs.  The fever that they had discussed with us is coming from the bruising that he has suffered, as well as the trauma to his body. With that being said they need to repair his legs to help with the fever.  The other news that we got this morning is that the bone in the left leg is very close to protruding from his skin.  We are praying that the vascular surgeon putting in the filter and orthopedic surgeon will not endure any complications during this surgery.  Each leg will take approximately 3 hours... so we are looking at least 6 hours just on his legs.  Please continue to lift him up in prayer.  From what we understand at this point he will continue to be in ICU with a ventilator helping him take the deep breaths that he needs to take to keep the lungs functioning properly.  We will post any updates as we get them.  If you know of anyone that is wanting updates please direct them to this website.

Mercer is still in surgery,but we have received our first update.  The filter is in place and they have completed the left leg surgery without any complications.  He has remained stable throughout the entire surgery thus far.  I will update the page as soon as we know something more.  It will be at least another 3 hours for the right leg.  Everything is going as planned.

 Wonderful news!!!!!  The Orthopedic Surgeon just updated us.  The surgeries are complete on both legs and they went  as well as they could have.  He is very satisfied with the way the surgeries went.  Mercer remained stable through out the entire surgery.  We feel really Blessed that everything went so well. There is a slight chance that they may try to take him off the ventilator, but there are no promises at this point. He will be in ICU  for awhile longer.  Now that the legs are completed the healing process can begin.  The next stage in the game plan is for him to have surgery on his ankle in about a week or so.  At this time the doctor will reevaluate the wrist to see if it will need any further surgery.  If the wrist were to need surgery he will do that surgery at the same time as the ankle surgery.  As you know plans do change often and frequently, so this is the plan as of this moment.  We haven't been able to see him yet, but when we do we will post again.

Please continue all the prayers, it is going to be a long road!

More inspiring news.  We've been back to see dad twice since the leg surgeries were completed.  He is still sedated, but looks good considering what he's been through.  During the second visit, about one hour ago, both of his arms seemed to twitch and slightly move, as if he was responding to us the only way he could.  He also shrugged his shoulder slightly at mom as she was telling him something.  We're taking that as a positive sign.  The ICU staff will begin to very gradually pull him out of sedation starting tonight.  That will give them a better idea of how long it might be before he is awake.  We are hoping he might be able to go to a regular room the first part of next week, before he has the last of the surgeries on his heel/ankle.  We'll visit him one more time tonight and start again tomorrow morning at about 10:30.  If I'm not able to get an update out tonight, I'll definitely get one out after tomorrow's first visit.

The entire family is in awe of how much response he is getting on this site.  We are all truly humbled.  Rest assured every thought and prayer submitted on this site will be kept so he can see them when he is awake and aware.

Thank you all again for all the prayers.  All we ask is that you keep them coming.  They will truly heal him completely!

Unfortunately, there was somewhat of a setback during the night last night.  His blood pressure dropped some and the ICU staff had to administer him some fluids, including some blood.  They moved him onto a rotating bed, which, if no one is familiar, is a bed he is strapped into and it slowly rotates left to right.  The purpose of the rotation is to keep everything circulating and to keep fluids, especially blood, from pooling up in the body.  Taking on these fluids has caused some swelling, but the nurse says this should go down in time.

I know I don't need to ask, but please keep up the prayers.  With lots of them, I know he will pull through, it will just take some time.  When more information comes in, I will be sure to update everyone.  Thanks again.

It has been a very uneventful day which is a Blessing!!!!!  There has not been any changes in his status since this morning.  He is still sedated and on the ventilator.  Just to let all of you know we did give Mercer updates on the game..... but it really wasn't much of game.  It is a good thing that he wasn't able to watch it on television.... he may have had a coronary.  You all know how Mercer is when it comes to Georgia football.  Goodnight until tomorrow morning.  We will update the page as soon as we see him in the morning ( we can't see him until 10:30).

Everyone I wanted to let you know that Mercer has taken a few steps back.  Up until this point we sugar coated for a lack of better words his condition.  We don't want anyone to have any surprises when they hear of his condition.  Last night his oxygen level dropped significantly, to the point at which the ventilator was of no help.  In order to help open the airways they had to put him on a bed face down.  This bed rotates 360 degrees and helps to open airways.  At his point his broken bones are a minute worry for us.  They have put him in a chemical paralysis which means that he is not able to move a muscle.  This paralyzes his lungs enabling the ventilator to completely control his breathing.  Remember his lungs are bruised, he is a smoker, and has been through several surgeries.  He has severe swelling over his entire body. He is going to be in ICU for awhile.  With this type of bed he could be on it from days to weeks.  We just don't know how long it is going to take for him to be able to properly breathe again on his own. The nurses reassured us that he could still hear us, and suggested that we place music in his room.  The ICU nurses will make sure that he has music 24-7.  We knew immediately that this would be a benefit to Mercer.  We told the nurses about his music career. The first songs that we played were Back In Time.  For those who don't know Mercer put together a 60's /Beachmusic Band.  He has been so excited about how great they are and all the talent in the band.  So everyone...... when Mercer is back to rocking.......we want you all to come out and hear the band.   Chris wanted me to ask everyone to continue to pray for Mercer, but for all the other families that in the waiting room with us.  We will update you gain when we have any news.  Please continue to pray. The power of prayer is amazing!!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know dad has had a positive response to the new (and very intimidating) bed they put him in this morning.  When they first strapped him in, the ventilator was providing 100% of his oxygen.  By this afternoon, the ICU nurses had turned it down to 60%, so he has shown some improvement.  But he is far from being able to have his final surgery.  After two nights of setbacks, it is our hope that he will remain stable or even slightly improve by morning.  That will only come if we and everyone else continues to send prayers to the Man Upstairs.  We cannot begin to express our thanks for all of the prayers received from everyone thus far, just keep them coming and he will pull through this.  I have no doubts.

Mom and I visited dad just a little while ago.  He is still in the rotating bed, however mom did not receive a phone call this morning from the ICU staff telling her about another setback; so that was encouraging.  During our visit with him, we were able to speak with the trauma doctor in ICU.  He explained to us that dad's lungs are still very sick, but they starting to look a little better in the xrays.  That news was also encouraging.  It looks as though he might be beginning to level off and even possibly starting to go back up hill.  That is our hope and our prayer.  And I have no doubt it is for everyone who has visited this site.  Thanks you all again so much for for everything everybody has said and done.  In time, I know dad will recover.

No new setbacks to report which is a Blessing!!! To all the band directors ... take note of the blog.  You are touching young lives more than you can ever know!  We, the family, are so touched by the out pouring of thoughts, prayers and memories.  We want to send our love to each of you for all that you have done and continue to do for us, WE ARE TRULY BLESSED!!!!!!  Goodnight until tomorrow morning.

It seems dad has made another baby step in the right direction.  During our first visit this morning, the trauma doctor told us dad's oxygen levels are remaining stable, and might even be looking a little bit better.  If it remains that way over the next couple of days, their plan is to hopefully get him out of the very intimidating bed he's currently in.  He still has alot of swelling and is still in bad shape, but it appears we may headed in the right direction soon.  It's going to take alot of patience, but I know he will come out of this at some point.  We appreciate more than you know all of the comments and thoughts and prayers from everyone.  I know I don't have to ask, but please continue to pray for him and his doctors and hopefully he will be home soon.

Dad's condition is still unchanged from this morning.  Which is a good thing, because that means he has not gotten worse.  The ICU staff still have hopes of getting him out of his elaborate bed in a couple of days, so let's keep praying that will happen.  Thanks once again for all your prayers, they are working.  So until tomorrow morning, good night.

Mercer has taken a small step again this morning.  His ventilation is improving, however we are looking at a few more days on the very intimidating bed. Like Cyndi White (Candice and Michael's sister-in-law) said on the blog, "Thank God for intimidating beds!"  Once he is back to a regular bed they will begin to ween him off the the ventilator.  We are praying that he will continue to take baby steps everyday.  As all of you know that when someone asks Mercer how he is doing he says, "Any day that my feet hit the ground is a good day!" We can't wait to see his feet hit the ground again.  Keep the prayers coming they are working!!!!!

Mercer is still stable. The slight improvement in ventilation that we saw this morning is important in getting him to the point of being off the ventilator.  If he continues to improve as he has each day it may be that he could begin to be weened of the ventilator over the weekend.  The thing about such a medical condition is that there can be changes in his status on a daily basis. We will keep you updated on any changes.  Keep the prayers coming.... we are seeing how they are working to help Mercer.  Our thanks and love! Until tomorrow night... Just wanted to let everyone know dad is still holding his own.  They had to increase his oxygen level this morning, but they are saying he did not have a setback.  During one his "moves" on the bed, his body just didn't like what they were doing and responded in a way that required them to increase the oxygen level a little.  However, they have already begun to decrease it again.  It is not down to the level it was yesterday, but we hope it will be soon, hopefully before the end of the day.  Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts and prayers, just please keep them coming.  They are working more than you know.

Sorry this morning's update is going up this afternoon.  Candice and I had to come to Gainesville to take care of some things for mom and dad.  Dad had a good night last night.  Oxygen and blood stats are remaining stable.  The ICU staff is going to be leaving him on his back inside his bed for longer than normal today, apparently to begin the process of weening him off of the bed.  He is still in bad shape, but really appears to be heading in the right direction.  Thanks to everyone for all of your comments, prayers, and support.  If there are any major changes during the day, we'll be sure to let you know.

The day passed by without any changes in Mercer's status. As we stated earlier the nurses were going to leave him on his back a little more today, and he didn't have any issues appear when they did so. They will continue to place him on his back a little more each day to test his ventilation output.  We hope that he will be in a regular bed soon.

We found out during the first visit this morning that they had to turn the ventilator back up to help increase his oxygen level.  This is somewhat of a setback for him.  We just need all the prayers for healing of his lungs.  He really needs to be able to breathe without a ventilator.  The plan is to have the ventilator turned back down by the end of the day ( to where it was yesterday). He is still in a chemical paralysis and sedated.  They are planning to again keep him on his back more today.  Pray, Pray, Pray for Mercer, we really need to get him over this bump in the road!

Dad's status tonight is still status quo.  His blood-oxygen level is holding steady and the venitlator is only working at 50% capacity.  The goal is 40%, so he's almost there.  The nurses are beginning to leave him on his back a little longer each day, and his body, especially his lungs, are starting to respond to that.  Everyone's thoughts and prayers are appreciated more than you know and are working, so please keep them coming.  Until tomorrow morning, good night.

Mom and I just returned from the first visit of the day and received some encouraging news.  The nurses told us they spoke to the trauma doctor this morning and he decided to have dad stay on his back in "the bed" for almost the entire day.  IF he responds well, and IF he remains stable, there is the possibility of taking him off of "the bed" tomorrow and putting him in a normal ICU bed.  The moral of the story is:  Your prayers are working so please keep them coming.  If we all keep praying, he will be healed before we know it.  Thank you all so much.

Well, so far so good.  Dad remained stable and responded well throughout the day on his back in "the bed."  Let's all hope and pray, emphasis on pray, that he stays that way through the night and maybe, just maybe, the doctor will give the go ahead to get him out of "the bed" in the morning.  I know I say it every night, but I can't begin to thank everyone enough for their prayers and their concern for my dad.  It really does show how many lives he's touched over the years.  Well, anyway, until tomorrow morning, good night everyone.

We got some rather disappointing news, but we know Mercer will benefit.  They will be performing a tracheaostomy on him in the morning.  As all of you know he has been on the ventilator going on 2 weeks.  When you are on the ventilator for weeks at a time you run the risk of damaging the larynx and other vital organs that are housed in the throat area. The long tubing in the throat really increases the risk of damage.  However, the tracheaostomy will allow him to breathe better with shorter tubing entering the lungs through the base of the lower neck.  They have assured us that he will be able to play the oboe again. This is a procedure that can be reversed.  This is going to make him much more comfortable.   He will be coming off "the bed" hopefully by the end of the week.  Keep the prayers coming, we know that are working!!!

Not much to update tonight.  Dad has remained stable all day today, and the tracheaostomy is still scheduled for tomorrow as far we know; hopefully in the morning.  We will definitely update everyone following the procedure tomorrow.  So until then, good night, God bless, and please keep the prayers coming; they are working.

Good morning all.  We just got back from visiting dad this morning.  He had a small issue last night with lying flat on his back, so they had to increase his oxygen level slightly.  He is still scheduled for the tracheaostomy today, which will probably take place after 12:00pm.  We will more than likely not get to see him until after the "trach," but we'll let everyone know how he's doing once they finish.  Thanks again for all the thoughts and prayers.  Until later......

Well, unfortunately, there is not much to say tonight.  The ICU staff were unable to perform the "trach" today.  A machine with a small camera in it, which is required for the procedure, was unavailable due to a cleaning process it needed to go through.  The "trach" is now scheduled for tomorrow morning, barring any unforseen circumstances through the night.  Dad has remained stable today with no major setbacks.  He is taking baby steps each day in his healing.  Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts comments, and especially prayers.  Talk to you all again tomorrow.

Well, more unfortunate news.  The ICU staff will unable to perform the "trach" today due to the swelling in dad's neck.  The swelling must go down before it can happen.  So now we must all pray for his swelling to diminish so we can get him to a point he can breathe better.  We can't thank everyone enough for all your prayers, but dad continues to need them, so keep them coming.

Just got back from tonight's late visit.  Dad's vital signs are remaining stable, which means he is taking baby steps and making a little progress.  The goal of the ICU staff is to perform his "trach" the old-fashioned, operating room way before the beginning of next week.  It is their hope to take him off of "the bed" a few days after that if his lungs respond favorably.  So, there is hope, and with all the prayers you all continue to send upstairs, that hope will be reality in the future.  We thank you all for your prayers.  Until tomorrow....

Hey there everybody.  Dad continues to take baby steps worth of progress.  Although his oxygen level dropped slightly during the night, which required the slight increase in the ventilator, the ICU staff also turned off his paralytic medication.  This is to allow his body to begin to feel and move and to see how it will respond in that condition.  If baby steps is what it takes for him to heal in the long run, we'll take it (Like Chuck McK said, "You have to crawl before you walk").  Just goes to show you that prayers work, so if you guys will keep praying, then so will we.  Thank you all again.  We appreciate it more than you know.

Good evening everyone.  Tonight's update is a little earlier than normal.  We're really tired and are going to get some extra rest tonight.  Dad has remained stable throughout the day with no major setbacks.  He is still on track for the old-fashioned "trach" before the beginning of next week, so let's all hope and pray that it happens.  All of his vital are still looking good.  The nurses tell us that although we can't physically "see" his progress, progress is being made one step at a time.  So until tomorrow, good night and thank you for all your prayers and concerns.

A minor setback occurred this morning.  After being on his back alot yesterday, dad's oxygen level dropped a bit and they had to raise the level with the ventilator.  After putting him on his stomach, he responded almost immediately and they were able to lower the ventilator to its original level.  This also will delay the "trach" procedure until he remains stable for a longer period of time on his back.  For those of you who may not know, due to experience as well as speaking with the ICU staff, we've learned that setbacks are just as much a part of being in ICU as progress.  It just goes with the territory.  So, all the more reason why we all have to keep praying for our favorite musician so he can get back to making music again soon.  Thank you all so much for your prayers thus far.  Please keep sending them to the Great Physician; they are working.

Dad is still holding his own today.  There hasn't been much change from this morning, except for the oxygen level being turned down a little more on the ventilator (a good thing).  I was able to speak with the trauma doctor at the noon visit.  He says it is now a matter of dad just resting and allowing his body, mainly his lungs, to heal.  So, until tomorrow, I hope everyone has a good evening and keep sending the prayers upstairs; they are helping alot.

Sorry I'm late everybody.  I am at home today and had to take care of some things this morning.  Finally got done.  Anyway, dad's condition is still status quo, which is a good thing at this point.  It means he's not getting any worse.  His body is just going to take a while to heal itself.  Hopefully the "trach" will happen this coming week.  The quicker they get that tube out of his throat, the better.  So let's all just keep praying and I'm sure he'll get better soon.  Thanks again to everyone.

So far, so good today.  Dad stayed on his back in "the bed" all day and his oxygen and blood levels all remained stable.  This is a good sign for him, in that his body responded well to being on his back for an extended period of time.  Other that that, everything else has stayed pretty much the same today.  Hopefully the DAWGS will hold onto the win and I can give him some good news in the morning.  So until then, thank you all for all the prayers; just please keep it up for him, he needs them.  Good night everybody.

Sorry again for this morning's update coming a little late.  Dad was able to stay on his back all day yesterday, all night last night, and so far, all day today.  During that time, all of his numbers and vital signs remained stable, so he appears to still be headed in the right direction, albeit very slowly.  And, for those of you who don't already know, we were able to give dad good news this morning about the DAWGS' big win last night.  I'm sure it made him feel better.  He might get upset, though, when he realizes he missed being there for it.  Anyway, thank you all for the thoughts and prayers.  Let's all keep it up as best as we can.  It will only make him better.

Hey everybody.  Mom and I received some encouraging news from dad's trauma doctor late this afternoon.  As I mentioned earlier today, dad has been on his back for a signigicant amount of time the past couple of days.  The doctor told us if he remains stable on his back throughout tonight, there is a chance they will take him off of "the bed" sometime tomorrow.  This is not set in stone, it depends on how his body responds throughout the night.  So you know what that means, dad will some extra special prayers tonight from everyone.  Let's not let him down now.  Please keep the prayers coming for him.  I have no doubt he will benefit from them.  Thank you all again from the bottom of our hearts for all your concern.  Until tomorrow......

More encouraging news this morning.  Dad stayed on his back all night long and remained stable while doing so.  His nurse told us this morning they still plan to take him off of "the bed" today and put him on a different bed.  The nurse also said it would probably take a couple of days for the swelling to go down enough for the "trach" to be performed.  Thank you all so much for the extra special prayers last night; they worked!  Let's not let up now though.  If we keep it up, he'll be better before we know it.  Thanks again.

Some more good news this morning.  Dad looks alot better.  His new bed has allowed some of the swelling to go down in his face and he looks more like his old self.  This is another step in the right direction.  Maybe, if the swelling continues to go down, just maybe they will be able to get the trach in soon so they can begin to wake him up.  We'll soon see.  Many thanks to everyone for all your prayers, they have worked so far and I have no doubts that they will continue to work.  So, until this evening.....

Encouraging news again.  Dad is still remaining stable on his new bed and the swelling has gone down some more.  The nurses have begun to very slightly back him off of the sedation medication.  He has even blinked his eyes a couple of times without being asked to do so.  All of our prayers are working so let's keep them going upstairs so he can get the "trach" and begin to wake up for us all.  Thanks again for all the prayers thus far.  Talk to you again tomorrow.

Good morning everybody.  Mom and I just got through visiting dad and more of his swelling has gone away.  He still has some on his neck so it will probably be a couple more days before the doctors can perform the trach.  Other than that, all his vital signs are remaining stable.  Our prayers are working so let's keep them up.  Thank you all for everything to this point.  And to the person who arranged for the autographed picture (you know who you are), Mom and I were speechless when it arrived this morning.  There aren't enough words to express our appreciation for such a gesture.  Talk to you all again this evening.

Hey there everybody.  Dad's condition has remained stable all day today.  He lost a little more swelling today, but still has more to go.  The staff are not going to pull off any more sedation medication tonight, but they may try some more tomorrow.  He occasionally has some eye and head twitches, which is another good sign of improvement.  It just goes to show you that prayers do work, not in our time, but in God's time.  With enough prayers, dad will be up and about before we know it.  Thanks again to everyone for your prayers.  Just don't stop now; we're getting so close.  Until tomorrow....

Another good morning.  Dad opened his left eye a little bit and even blinked his eyes a couple of times as mom spoke to him.  On two occasions, he moved his mouth, as if he was realizing he could feel his mouth again.  The staff said this was fine and if he "misbehaved" too much, they would up his sedation meds a little, so as not to damage his throat with the ventilator tube.  His numbers and vital signs are remaining stable and he continues to respond well to everything.  Just another baby step in the right direction.  Everyone's prayers are working and are very much appreciated.  Please keep them coming.  Maybe a week from today, we all might be able to say we're thankful he's awake.  Prayers will accomplish that, I have no doubt.  Thanks again everybody.

Everything is still status quo with dad today.  When we visited him at 2:30, both of his eyes were open about halfway and he blinked several times as mom talked to him.  He also moved his mouth a little as well (Don't know if he's trying to tell us something or if he has realized he can feel his mouth for the first time in 3 weeks; hope it's the former).  This is very encouraging, but he still needs our prayers for a full and quick recovery, so let's not stop now.  Thanks to everybody for all the prayers so far.  Talk to you all again tomorrow.

Good morning everybody.  Dad looked good this morning.  The only swelling left on his face and head is in his neck.  Once that goes down a little more, the trach will be performed, hopefully at the beginning of next week.  He had a good night last night and all his numbers and vital signs continue to look good.  Our prayers are definitely working, but we can't afford to stop now.  So let's keep 'em coming and maybe, just maybe, dad will be able to say a word or two by Thanksgiving Day.  Thank you all again for everything you've done so far.  Talk to you again later today.

No major changes today.  Dad's numbers, vital signs, and swelling have remained stable today.  Oh, almost forgot, they did lower his breathing rate on the ventilator, which means his lungs are closer to healing.  Other than that, everything has remained status quo today.  Thank you all so much for everything you have done; just keep praying to the Great Physician, so dad can be healed and home for Christmas.  Thanks again.

Happy Game Day everybody!  Dad is remaining stable this morning from last night.  The staff did lower his oxygen percentage level on the ventilator a little through the night, but otherwise everything else is the same.  Hopefully, the Dawgs will pull off another win tonight to make him feel better.  A big "Thank You" to everyone for everything you have done and continue to do for my dad.  It has truly humbled the entire family to see how many people care about him.  Don't let up now though.  Still alot of praying to do before he wakes up.  Thanks again.

Encouraging news this afternoon.  Mom talked to the trauma doctor today and he said he can now feel dad's trachea through the swelling.  His plan is to perform the trach this coming week, hopefully Monday or Tuesday.  That means that with alot of prayers, the doctors can get that done and dad might be able to talk to us a little bit by Thanksgiving Day.  What an awesome thing to give thanks for on Thursday.  Anyway, thanks again to everyone for all their prayers.  Just please keep 'em coming.  Thanks again.

Good evening everybody.  First, sorry for not posting today until now.  I went down to Atlanta this morning to visit and forgot to take my laptop with me, which prevented me from posting this morning.  Second, some encouraging news.  Since dad has been in the hospital, he has been sedated with two different medications.  Last night, they turned one of them off and reduced the amount given on the other one.  He has also lost a little more swelling in his neck and chest area.  The trauma doctor still has plans to perform the trach procedure this week, so maybe, just maybe, with enough prayers, dad might be able to say a word or two on Thanksgiving Day this Thursday.  Thank you all again for all your prayers and wonderful comments on this site.  They are all working, both for dad's healing and in keeping our spirits up.  We can't thank you all enough.

Oh, and just so none of you will worry too much, tomorrow and Tuesday will most likely see only one post as well.  I am going back to work tomorrow for the first time in 3-1/2 weeks and I will undoubtedly be busy trying to get caught up those two days.  Just wanted to let you know.  Thanks again.

Hello everybody, hope you've had a good Monday.  I've spoken to Rory a couple of times today and he said the ICU staff were able to turn down the oxygen percentage on dad's ventilator a little more today.  Rory also said it appeared to him that pretty much all of the swelling in dad's neck is now gone.  That only means that he's that much closer to getting his trach done.  So thank you all again so much for the prayers.  We are still amazed at the number  of people pulling for dad.  One person I work with told me today she was amazed at the network of people praying for my dad, and for us as well.  Thank you again so much, just keep it going.  He's getting closer....

Happy Thanksgiving Eve everybody.  Some encouraging news this afternoon.  When mom and I visited dad at 12:30, he opened his eyes when he heard our voices.  I asked him if he could blink his eyes and he blinked them immediately.  He then shed a small tear from his left eye.  Mom took that opportunity to fill him in on a few things that have happened the past few weeks.  As we left, I was able to speak to the trach doctor and asked him when he might be performing the trach.  He said it is going to happen soon, but he is working with the orthopedic team, who have been talking about possibly doing his last surgery this coming Monday.  The trach needs to performed as close as possible in conjuction with that surgery so he doesn't have to endure two more separate doses of anesthesia.  Again, this is very encouraging, so everyone please, during this Thanksgiving holiday, please take just a minute or two to send some extra special prayers to the Great Physician.  With that assistance, I have no doubt dad will be home soon.  Thank you all again for everything.  The Crook family wishes each and every one of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.  We have alot to be thankful for this time of year.  I personally am thankful my dad is still with us.  Thanks again.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.  Hope everyone is enjoying a well-deserved day off from the daily grind and having good fellowship with family and friends.  Mom and I visited dad at 10:30 and as soon as we walked into the room and talked to him, he opened his eyes almost completely open.  When we asked him to respond to a few simple questions by blinking his eyes, he did so immediately.  His nurse told us the ventilator mode has been changed so that dad is actually initiating each breath on his own and the ventilator just gives him a little boost to help him complete the breath.  Due to the holidays, we won't know anything about the potential final surgery on Monday until Monday morning when the doctors return.  Again, we hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and please say a few more prayers for dad so hopefully they can do the last surgery next week.  Thanks again to everyone for everything.

Good morning everybody.  More encouraging news this morning.  Just before we left yesterday, his nurse had to change the ventilator back to providing dad's breaths for him (this wasn't due to his condition directly, but rather his nurse having to move him around more than he liked to change some dressings), but it was changed back to allow him to initiate his own breaths this morning when we arrived.  Also, in addition to blinking his eyes, he nodded and moved his head a little this morning as well.  Just one more step in the right direction.  Our prayers are working, we just have to keep them going.  That way, hopefully the doctors can do his trach and final surgery next week as they have discussed.  Thanks again to everybody for everything you have done.  And also, a special thank you to the person at the Cookie store at the mall in Gainesville for the display cookie.  It really meant alot to us, and it will to dad too when we show him the picture someone took of it.  Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving with family and friends.  Thanks again.

Still more encouraging news this morning.  As we finished our visit this morning, we spoke with a representative of the orthopedic surgical team.  He told us the plan is to do the final surgery on Monday, but only if the trauma team clears him for that surgery.  It looks very promising so let's all send up a few special prayers for dad this weekend so that surgery can happen and after that, he might be home soon.  It would also be nice to tell dad the Dawgs pulled off the upset tonight; I know that would make him feel a little better.  Here's to hoping.  Thanks again to everybody for everything you've done and are doing to help my dad.  We appreciate it more than you know.

Good BULLDAWG morning to everybody.  Mom and I just got through visiting dad.  All the consent forms are signed and the surgery is still scheduled for tomorrow, although we do not know exactly what time it will take place.  One minor change this morning as the ICU staff has changed his ventilator mode back to providing his breaths for him.  This is not a setback for him, rather it is to let his lungs get some extra rest today in order to prepare them for the anesthesia and surgery tomorrow.  On a serious note, let's all take a minute this evening and tomorrow morning to send up some extra special prayers for dad so that he can get through his last round of anestheia and surgical procedures with as few complications as possible.  With the number of people praying for him, I have no doubt he will pull through it.  Let's not stop now.  Thank you all again for everything.

Good evening everybody.  Unfortunately, there has been a minor setback, not in dad's condition, but in the surgery itself.  Apparently, some patients requiring emergency surgery came into the hospital during the holiday weekend, so the orthopedic surgical team has postponed dad's surgery until Wednesday.  Other than that, nothing else has changed in his condition.  So until then, we'll all just have to keep praying and keeping positive that the surgery will indeed happen on Wednesday.  Thanks again for everything so far and sorry for the "bummer" news.  Talk to you all tomorrow.

Good evening everybody.  Sorry for the late post.  I am back at work again, and will only be able to do one a day for a while.  After talking to mom this morning, dad appeared to have a minor setback this morning.  However, depending on how you look it at, it may not be that bad.  Dad looked to be agitated/irritated and shook his head in a "no" motion" more than usual.  His heart and breathing rates were pretty high, as was his fever.  One of the trauma doctors told mom most of the sedation medications were probably almost completely flushed out of his body, so he is more aware than he has been in the past few days.  Now for a different point of view.  I am not trying to make light of dad's condition, which is still not great; this is just my personal opinion.  The last time he was awake, the surgeon told him he would be fixing his broken bones and he would be probably be out of the hospital in 2-3 weeks.  Now he wakes up, with tubes and wires coming out of every hole in his body and doesn't have any idea what's going on.  He also has no way to communicate to us to be able to ask what's going on.  For the lack of a better word, I'm sure that could be a "scary" situation to be in.  Again, this is just me, but I think he is more aware of his surroundings and wants to ask questions about his condition, but can't.  That would agitate/irritate almost anybody.  Anyway, enough babbling.  Now, about the surgery.  Mom also spoke to the trauma doctor today and he said he saw some "haziness" in the bottom of his lungs in his latest x-ray.  That could be one of two things; fluid in the lungs or some type of infection.  He also said if it is fluid, the surgery can still take place on Wednesday.  If it is an infection, the surgery would have to be delayed.  So, again, sorry for rambling on, but I thought everyone would like to know more about what's going on.  Myself and the rest of the family cannot begin to express our appreciation and gratitude for all of your thoughts and, most importantly, prayers.  Please continue to pray for dad's recovery.  Whether he comes home for Christmas or not is now the least of our concern.  We just want him to come home.  Thank you all again very much.  Until tomorrow....

Hey there everybody.  Encouraging news this evening.  Dad's surgery is still scheduled for tomorrow morning, barring any unforeseen circumstances.  The ICU staff and surgeons have also said if dad responds well after the surgery and recovery, he may be able to be released from Atlanta Medical Center soon, however he won't be going straight home.  He'll spend about a month or so in an acute intensive rehab center, or something to that effect, in the Athens area (much better than downtown Atlanta).  After that, I'm sure there will be several more months of rehab and physical therapy.  So let's keep the praying going for a few more days and maybe he'll closer to home soon.  Thank you all so much for everything so far.  All the prayers and comments have meant the world to us.  I know they will to him as well when he's awake enough to read them all.  I'll let everyone know tomorrow how the surgery went.  Until then.....

Good morning all.  I just got through visiting dad this morning.  His orthopedic surgeon has said there is a good chance he will not need to do the surgery on his right ankle and heel after all.  Since dad has been laid up in ICU, he has not had to put any pressure on that foot.  Therefore, the ankle and heel have begun to heal, and for the most part, it is healing almost correctly.  There might possibly be a need to perform minor corrective surgery in the future, but that will not be able to be determined until he starts putting weight on it and walks on it some.  The surgeon also said he prefers to do it that way versus trying to rebreak it and fix it now.  Just goes to show the Lord knew what he was doing when he had dad laid up in ICU for so long.  The prayers are still working, so don't stop now.  With the right prayers, he just might be outta here in a couple of days.  There is now a tiny light at the end of the tunnel.  Thanks to everyone for everything.  Talk to you all later.

More good news everybody.  OK, great news.  Dad is now in a special rehab facility in the Athens area that specializes in the intensive rehab and therapy he will require for about the next month.  Although we realize there are alot of you who would like to visit with him, visiting hours at the facility are pretty much restricted to family.  As soon as he is in a position to have visitors or in a location to have visitors, we let everyone know as soon as possible so that he can begin getting the encouragement he will need to completely recover.  The family cannot begin to thank everyone enough for all the prayers that have gotten him and us to this point in his recovery.  Now we just need the prayers for his patience in his continued rehab and physical therapy.  Thank you all again for everything.  This is truly one of many milestones in his continued recovery.

Hey there everybody.  I just talked to mom a little while ago.  Dad's breathing tube will FINALLY be removed tomorrow morning at 7am and will be replaced with the trach tube.  Starting Saturday morning, they will begin his physical therapy and rehabilitation.  He was awake and alert for most of the day, although he did get a little agitated late in the afternoon (who wouldn't with a tube down their throat for 5 weeks).  God's miracles are amazing and all your prayers have made it all possible.  Please keep 'em coming and soon he will be home for everyone to visit and encourage him.  Thank you all again for everything.

Hey!  I just talked to mom and the tube is out of his throat.  FINALLY!!!!  Mom said he looked much better without it, everything went fine, and he is resting peacefully.  Thanks for all the prayers guys.  There are still working and will continue to work to get him recovered, up and walking, and home before we know it.  Can't wait to see him this evening without the tube!  So, until the next update.....

Some encouraging news tonight.  After work, I went to see dad at the rehab hospital.  He looked alot better without that tube coming out of his mouth.  He can respond to us when we ask him yes/no questions and he can even mouth a few words.  Learning to lip read is going to be challenging but interesting, at least until he can begin to talk.  He does know he was in a car accident, but cannot remember the details of what happened, which is probably a good thing.  We're not going to tell him about it unless he really wants us to.  He is also very frustrated because he can't express to us what he wants to say or ask (and we all know how he loves to talk).  One of his respiratory therapists came in while we were there and she told him if he continued to make progress like he did today, he might be able to come off of the ventilator altogether in 2-3 days.  Starting tomorrow morning, the physical therapists will begin their job of getting him moving and, eventually, on his feet, however limited that may be.  I know I keep saying this and sound like a broken record, but we cannot begin to tell everyone how much we truly appreciate all the prayers and everything that has been done for us during the last 5 1/2 weeks.  But please keep the prayers coming, because after I saw the frustration in his eyes tonight, he is going to need all the patience God can muster up for him.  Thank you all again very much.  Until tomorrow........

Happy Championship Gameday everybody.  ROLL TIDE!!  Mom and I are sitting here in the room with dad right now.  He's doing well with his breathing treatments according to his respiratory nurse, who is also in here right now.  He looks really good considering what he's been through.  He does, however, have that mad, impatient look on his face (All you current and former students remember what that looks like, LOL).  Anyway, not much to report right now, except that he's slowly heading in the right direction.  Now that I think about it, that's all that really needs to be reported.  Thanks again for all the prayers; keep 'em coming.

Well folks, The Tide did it, Florida finally got beat.  ROLL TIDE!!  In other news, dad is still doing pretty good down in Bulldawg Country.  He is still frustrated because he keeps trying to tell us things and it is difficult to understand him with the tube in his throat.  The staff seems confident that he will be able to begin speaking next week, so let's pray that holds true.  With all the prayers you guys are sending up, I have no doubt it will.  Other than that, he's pretty much holding his own.  Thanks again for all the prayers and everything else you guys are doing.  It means so much to us.  Talk to you again tomorrow.

Hey there everyone.  Candice and I went to Athens this morning to visit dad.  His nurses had his hair combed and he looked alot like his old normal self, just quieter. LOL.  Seriously, he spent alot of time with the ventilator turned off and breathing on his own and did very well.  His respiratory therapist said he was doing alot better today than he was yesterday.  He is still getting frustrated because he can't talk yet, but that will pass soon.  Everything else is status quo.  So I bid you all a good night, and thanks again for all the prayers and comments.  With some prayers, I'm sure he'll be able to talk to us again and tell us all what to do and how to do as usual.  LOL!  Until tomorrow...

Hey everybody.  Mom talked to the respiratory doctor this evening.  He said dad is doing very well and is doing alot of breathing on his own.  He can't give any kind of prediction as to when he might be able to come off the ventilator, but he did say that he's headed in the right direction.  Now for some more concerning news.  When mom arrived at the hospital this morning, dad had just returned from having a CT Scan.  Later in the day, she said she found out why.  This morning, the therapists performed some tests, commonly called "prick tests," to check on dad's sense of feel.  He is having alot of difficulty with feeling in his extremities, particularly in his hands, legs, and feet.  Mom was told they would not know the results of the scan until late this afternoon or tomorrow morning.  As of 5:00pm, the results had not come in yet.  I know all of you have been praying from the bottom of your hearts for dad and I hate to keep asking, but please make your prayers extra special tonight in hopes that dad's CT Scan results are positive tomorrow.  I know in my heart that with enough prayers, the Great Physician will pull dad through this like he has everything else thus far.  Thank you all again so much for your prayers.  He still needs alot of them, so please keep sending them up.

Hey guys.  I know I'm not supposed to do this at work, but I just can't help myself.  Last night, dad squeezed mom's hand and moved his toes at her request.  When mom got to the hospital this morning, the doctor was in the room and he told her that the CT Scan results were negative, which means nothing is appears to be wrong with him neurologically (I would like to clarify last night's update.  In reference to his scan results, I meant to say I hope his results are positive in nature, not positive in that something is wrong.  I'm sure you all understood, but after I read it a few minutes ago, it just didn't sound right).  The physical therapist came in as well and said they may try to get him out of bed today and sit him in a chair to see how he responds.  I have no doubt that all of our prayers played a role in what happened last night and this morning.  Thank you all so much!  If we keep doing what we're doing, then dad will keep doing what he's doing, which is making daily progress.  Thanks again!

Hey everybody.  Positive news to report tonight.  The physical therapists sat dad up in bed today and he seemed to respond well, although it did wear him out (it was his first time to do this in 6 weeks).  The respiratory therapist also changed the mode on his trach and allowed him to talk.  His first words were, "I'd pay $5.00 for a glass of iced tea."  She also said he is doing great on his breathing and changed to him to what is called a trach collar.  With this device, he breaths all on his own; the collar is actually a mask-type breather that provides with warm, moist air to breathe, instead of the dry air he would get without it.  These are all great strides he's made, but he's not out of the woods yet.  We all just need to keep on praying and with that, I know dad will just keep on progressing.  Thank you again for everything.  We appreciate it so much.

Hey everybody.  I've got some more encouraging news tonight.  I went to visit him for the first time since Sunday, and he almost exactly like his old self again.  He is talking alot, mostly about how he's going to get through all the rehab and deal with the pain.  He then said something that is typical of him.  He said, "I guess I'll just have to pull myself up by my boot straps and get it done."  I knew right then that he is going to get through this with flying colors and then some.  And it is all thanks to all of you who are constantly praying for him and pulling for him to make a full recovery.  I reminded him about this web site and told him about the hundreds of people who sent him well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.  I could by the look on his face that he appreciated it very much.  We all appreciate it, more than you will ever know.  We thank you all for the prayers for his recovery.  Now that he's awake, he needs prayers for patience in going through the physical therapy and rehab.  With the amount of prayers that have gone up thus far, I have no doubt he'll be fine.  Oh, and one more thing.  I have had some recent requests from people who would like to send him cards.  That is absolutely fine and the address is listed under Hospital Information at the top of this page.  Thank you all again.  Until tomorrow.....

Good evening everybody.  Not much to report tonight.  I just talked to mom and dad did about as well today as he did yesterday.  Some things came up and the PT staff weren't able to sit him up or get him into a chair, but one of the nurses was able to come in and work with his limbs while he laid in bed.  So he's still on the right track, it's just going to be a while.  Thanks again for all you prayers and support.  They are working for sure.  Talk to you all again tomorrow.

Sorry for the late update everybody; busy day.  Candice and I went to see dad tonight.  He had a very busy day today as well.  After being moved out of the bed and sitting in his chair for about an hour and a half, he was also moved from his semi-ICU style room into a regular, more private room.  In addition to that, he had the pin removed his left wrist, which was the one broken during the accident.  By the time we left, he was pretty tired, so we let him get some much needed rest.  I'll be back to see him in the morning.  After that, I'll be headed to band practice (For those of you who don't already know, dad and Rory and I, along with several of his old band buddies, put together another 60s rock and roll horn band this past summer.  The goal is for him to get better so we, Back in Time, can play at his 45th high school reunion in May 2010.  We WILL be ready; him included).  Thank you all so much for all the prayers and comments of support.  I showed him the web site this past Wednesday and he had a look of great appreciation on his face when he saw that the number of comments for him was over 1,000.  Thanks again; talk to you tomorrow.

Hey everybody.  Another status quo kinda day in Athens today.  Dad is still frustrated because everything is going so slow.  He is making progress though.  Every evening before mom goes home, the doctors and therapists say he is performing better than he did the day before.  But because he is feeling that way (impatient like his normal self), I have no doubt he will be able to conquer this milestone in his life.  All he needs is a little patience; OK, alot of patience.  That's where you all come in.  Just pray for some patience and I'm sure it will be delivered in abundance.

Thank you all so much for all the prayers and comments of support you have sent our way.  They have really kept us motivated to face each day with a positive attitude.  In addition, I want to let each of you know that I'll will probably begin updating the web site about every other day for a while.  This is due in part to the approaching Christmas holidays and the fact that we are now more involved with his recovery and the time available to update the site has diminished a little.  But don't worry, I will continue to update the site so all of you that care so much about dad can keep up with his progress; it just won't be as often.  Thank you again for everything.  I don't think we could've gotten this far without your support.  Talk to you again soon.

Hello all.  It seems strange seeing this blog update with a day missing; that's a first.  Anyway, I come to you this evening with a request for alot of prayers, as if that's different than any other time.  But seriously, the prayers I/we ask for are not for his healing, but for alot of extra patience and will power.  You see, we learned today that dad may be in the Athens hospital longer than originally expected.  When dad learned of this, it really seemed to get him down.  Since he was unable to see the dire condition he was in while in Atlanta, he feels he is not making any progress and this is subsequently becoming a downer for him.  Myself, the rest of the family, and even all of you know the kind of man he is and know he will make it through this with flying colors; now we need to make him believe that as well.  So again, patience and will power is what he needs.  With enough prayers for those sent to the Great Physician upstairs, the healing will come.  I believe that with all my heart and every ounce of my being.  Let's just make sure he believes that too.  Thanks again for all that you have done.  We appreciate it alot more than any of you realize.

Hey everybody.  Again, it feels strange seeing a missing day on here.  Well, after two straight days of pretty intense physical therapy, dad is beginning to move body parts that he couldn't just a couple of days ago.  It really is comforting seeing him come back and be himself again, albeit very slowly.  He also has a better appreciation of how much progress he has actually made.  Up until yesterday, he didn't think he was making much progress.  I proceeded to tell him that since he was completely sedated and chemically paralyzed for several weeks, he doesn't realize how bad his condition really was while he was in Atlanta.  I also told him I wouldn't tell him about until he was ready to hear it.  He then asked me to tell him about it.  I then went into detail about his entire condition and progress throughout his stay at Atlanta Medical Center.  I could tell by the look on his face that he did have a better appreciation of his progress thus far.  He is rip-roariing and ready to get to work so he can back on his feet again.  He also realizes (a little) that it is going to take longer than just a few weeks.  I chalk that up to your prayers for patience.  They are working, as they have since that October night some seven weeks ago (Wow, has it really been that long?).  In your spare time, if you have any this time of year, please keep sending up the "patience prayers;" he still needs as many as he can get.  Thank you all again for everything.  We couldn't make it without you.

Good evening everyone.  More progress to report.  The doctor's have removed dad's trach tube and he is now eating solid food; soft at first, but that will progress as well.  This evening before mom left the hospital, the lung doctor came in and said there was no need for him to see dad as a patient any longer.  His lungs are doing good enough to require no more major treatment.  What great progress this is.  Our prayers are being answered as we speak.  We cannot thank each and every one of you enough for all your prayers.  Just keep 'em coming.  Don't forget, we still need to find him some patience.  Thanks again.  Talk to you again in a day or two.

Hey everybody.  I know it's been a few days since I updated you guys, but dad's weekend was rather uneventful since the physical therapy staff wasn't around.  However, he and mom did do some work on their own during the down time and made some accomplishments.  Mom said he was in a good mood today, so I think he's finally resigned himself to the fact this will be a long, slow journey and a little progress is better than no progress at all.  Each day, he's able to move a little something he couldn't move the day before.  That's what I call progress and we'll take however ever large or small it is.  Dad is loving the fact that he gets to eat real solid food and really loves getting his daily dose of sweet tea.  If that's the only thing he got, I think he'd be satisfied.  Anyway, we hope everyone has a good week leading into the Christmas holidays.  Please keep the prayers coming so dad can have many more good mood kinda days like today.  Thank you all for everything.

Happy Christmas Eve Eve everybody.  Dad had a very tiring day today, mostly due to an extremely strenuous workout in physical therapy.  I guess they're trying to get extra work in because of the holidays this weekend.  He's still making a little progress each day.  He's loving the fact he gets to eat real food and drink real drinks for a change.  His mood and attitiude have also been good the past few days, which anyone who's been through something like this knows, that goes a long way in rehab. 

From the entire Crook family, we would like to thank each and every person for every small gift, every helpful gesture, and most importantly, every prayer said and thought since that fateful night back in October.  It has been those things that have gotten us and dad through this speed bump in our lives.  And last, but certainly not least, we would also like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and just good old fashioned fellowship with family.  Cherish these times; you never know when it will change in the blink of an eye.  Merry Christmas and thanks again for everything.  Talk to you all again this weekend.

Happy New Year's Eve everybody.  I am so sorry it has has been so long since the last update.  Alot has been going on since the last one, from Christmas to some personal happenings to tonight.  Anyway, enough rambling.  Dad has made a good bit of progress during the last week.  Last night, he was able to grab a cookie with his hand, raise his hand, and feed himself.  He tried to raise a glass of sweet tea, but it proved to be too heavy for him at this point.  We have been told the physical therpy staff is going to begin, very gently, putting him on his feet in the coming weeks.  This is terrific news and it gives us all hope that he will be walking in the coming months.

Again, we apologize for the long delay in progress reports, but alot has happened in the last eight days.  In this, the final hour of 2009 (a completely abyssmal year by the way), the entire family would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for the thoughts and prayers expressed by each and every one of you over the last two months.  We cannot begin to tell you how much we truly appreciate everything you have done for us, and will continue to do for us, in the months to come.  Please know that as soon as dad is ready to entertain visitors on a regular basis, we will get the word out, because we understand the need you have to encourage him after all the years of encouragement he gave you.  But until then, all we ask is that you continue to pray for him, because prayer is the thing that will get him through this pivotal time in his life.  Thank you all again and we hope you all have the happiest of New Years!!  Talk to you again in 2010!!!!

Happy belated New Year everybody!  So sorry this update has been so long in the making.  The past couple of weeks have been very busy and eventful.  Dad has made a good bit of progress since we last talked.  He is sitting up on the side of the bed for varying lengths of time and he is able to almost completely feed himself, as well as raise a drinking glass and drink from it with no assistance.  He also got his first haircut today for the first time since before the accident (That's about 3 months ago now).  He looked so much more like his old self once he was done.  He felt better too.  This coming Wednesday, he has his first post-surgery appointment to see his surgeon in Atlanta.  The doctor will giving him a good once over and check to see if the minor corrective surgery on his right ankle and heel will in fact be necessary.  I think he will also try to determine about how long it might be before he can begin to put weight on his feet and legs.  We can't thank you enough for all the prayers and comments you've sent.  It means the world to us.  However, I have another prayer request.  In addition to dad, please send up some prayers for my father-in-law.  Several years ago, Candice's dad, Billy White, Sr., was diagnosed with prostate cancer.  After enduring surgery to remove his prostate, and the cancer with it, he has fought through one complication after another and come through them with flying colors.  We've recently learned there is a possibility the cancer may have returned to his prostate.  We won't know for sure for about another week, when more test results return.  Please pray for both of our fathers, for they are both still with us by miracles alone.  Thank you all again, and I will try to keep the updates coming on a more regular basis.

Hello everybody, long time no talk.  This might be an understatement, but I think today's update is pretty good news.  Dad went to Atlanta yesterday for a follow-up appointment with his surgeon, who said everything looks as it should at this point.  He also said dad is ready to begin bearing weight on his legs and further ready for more aggressive, intensive physical therapy.  He has another follow-up visit in 7 weeks, and the surgeon said he wouldn't be surprised if dad walked into his office in some shape, form, or fashion for that visit.  Dad said he understood the goal and is ready to work to be able to do so.  Upon returning to Athens, his physical therapist looked over the notes prescribed by the surgeon and said she would get him on his feet immediately.  At that point, with the help of another physical therapy assistant, they lifted dad out of the bed and he stood on his feet for the first time since the day of the wreck, all the while holding onto the bed for support.  He did it twice for about 2 minutes each.  I can't tell you all how amazing it was to see him on his feet this soon.  So, if you would, please continue to pray for dad, as he takes a new "step" in his rehabilitation.  And also continue to pray for Candice's father as well, as they are supposed to find out the results of his tests today.  Thank you all again for everything.  Talk to you again soon.

Hey everybody.  A few interesting developments since we last talked.  The first is that dad will most likely be moving to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville this week to begin what will be about one month of intensive and aggressive physical therapy.  Unfortunately, during that time, his visiting hours will still be restricted to family, because he will eventually be doing about 6 hours a day of PT, 6 days a week.  This will undoubtedly wear him out.  We understand how much everyone would like visit with him, but we ask again that everyone please wait until dad is ready to receive visitors.  The best thing you can do for him right now is continue to pray for him and his therapists as he contintues to take new "steps" each day on the road to recovery.  Thank you all again for everything. 

The other development is that Candice's dad's test results came back and they showed that the cancer HAD NOT returned.  Thank you all so much for your prayers for him as well.  He has taken a long road that dad is just now beginning.  With enough prayers, we know dad will fully recover in time.  Thanks again.

Surprise everybody, I decided to update the site 2 days in a row for the first time in quite a while.  And it is for good reason.  Dad was transferred this afternoon to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he will begin undergoing more aggressive and intensive physical therapy beginning either tomorrow or Thursday.  Unfortunately though, he still cannot have many visitors outside of family, due to the amount of work he will be doing 6 days a week for about the next month.  I did however update the Hospital Information section with the address for those of you who like to send cards of encouragement to those in need and do not know the Medical Center address.  This has truly been a blessed day in having dad closer to home.  Thank you all again for all the thoughts and prayers.  It is so greatly appreciated.  I will continue to keep you all updated to his progress and when he will able to received visitors.  Thanks again.

Hello everybody.  I know it's been a long time since we last talked so I'll get right to the point.  The last week and a half have seen some amazing improvement in dad's condition.  He is now standing up and WALKING with the help of a walker, but we all know that he will not be held back by that walker for very long.  He will also be going HOME soon and will continue with outpatient physical therapy through the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.  I apologize for taking so long to update you on this, but the last couple of weeks have been busy.  Once he returns home, we will give him some time to get re-acclimated, since it has been 3 months since he was last there, and when he feels he is ready to receive some visitors, we will let everyone know.  We might even have a small party for him, who knows.  Anyway, thank you all again for all the prayers, thoughts, and support.  It means the world to all of us, including dad.  Talk to you again soon.

Hi everyone. Michael and I were hoping that our next update would be one that would say that Mercer was home. However God wanted to take care of another little issue. I think that maybe God is testing his patience to see if it has improved. ( I am happy to report that he is a little more patient than before the accident.)
 As many of you know Mercer was suppose to be coming home tomorrow, however there has been a minor set back.  He is having his gallbladder removed as I type this update.  He was feeling down and out about the news that he had to have it removed and the fact that they needed to do it tonight. Please keep him in your prayers.  If everything goes well he might be able to go home by the weekend.  The removal of the gallbladder seems so simple compared to all that he has been through over the past few months, but it really feels like a set back to Mercer at this point.  I know that once he is home he will not give this surgery a second thought.  Thanks for all the prayers and we will update you again soon!

Well, dad's surgery went well.  Once he got into the recovery room, the ventilator tube was out and he was talking to his nurses, albeit in some significant pain.  He got to his new room at about 12:15am, still in pain, but glad the surgery was over.  The surgeon told us that, worst case scenario, she thinks he will have to spend an extra 4-5 days in the hospital to recover.  So, after being told that he would be going home 15 weeks to the day after the wreck he now has to spend another few days in the hospital for a little more recovery.  Hopefully, by the Grace of God, and some of your prayers, he will get home before the 16 week mark.  Thank you all again for everything.  Maybe the next update will tell you he's home.  Talk to you again soon.

OK, everybody I'll get right to the point.  I have great, no terrific, no FANTASTIC news to report.  Dad is HOME!!!!  The recovery from his surgery has gone well and the doctors said they did not need to torture him any longer.  He got home at about 2:30 this afternoon and was both emotional and speechless upon entering his home for the first time in 109 days!  I know each and every one of you would love to pay him a visit and welcome him back to the world, but if you can just wait a little longer so he can re-adjust himself to being home, I promise you there will be an opportunity for all of you to visit with him and let him know how much you really care about him. 

We cannot begin to thank everyone enough for all of your support, thoughts, and prayers throughout the past few months.  It means more to us than you will ever know.  Please continue to send up the occasional prayer, as his journey through physical therapy is not completely over yet.  I will continue to update this site periodically to keep everyone informed as to his progress.  Thank you all again very much.  There aren't enough words in the English language to express our gratitude.  Talk to you again soon.

Hello everybody.  I know it has been a while since the last post and I'm sure alot of you have been chomping at the bit wanting to know about dad's progress.  Well, here it is.  He's been chugging right along with his physical therapy 3 days a week.  He is walking really well with his walker and is not too far away from graduating up to a cane.  He stands up pretty good with minimal help and is rarely using his wheelchair anymore.  Two days ago, he visited his surgeon in Atlanta for another follow-up appointment.  The doctor said dad is making "amazing progress" and sees no need for anymore surgeries in the near future.  He pointed out there might be a possibility of knee replacement(s) in about 5-10 years, but there is no need to worry about that at all right now.  He seems to be on track of being at or near 100% of his pre-wreck condition in the next 6 months or so, give or take.  He is slowly beginning to read all of the wonderful comments all of you have posted on this site for him and he will be emailing me some comments he has for all of you, so as soon as I get them, I will post them for you.  Just know he is extremely grateful for all of your thoughts and prayers, as is the rest of the family.  So, until next time, everybody stay warm.  Hopefully Spring is right around the corner.

Hey everybody.  I hope all of you are doing OK and getting ready for Springtime.  Today my update will be short and sweet because Mom and Dad are providing you with the update this time.  They both have some things to tell you so here is what they have to say, and I quote:


Today will mark 4 weeks since I have returned home.  I am dilligently doing my rehab, both at the rehab center and at home.  I am lucky to have a wife and children pushing me to get better.  No one could ask for a more loving wife, sons, daughers-in-law and grand daughters than I have.  I am walking some on a cane and even taking some steps without cane or walker.  The therapy is very tough, but I AM going to recover.  Why?  Because of the outpouring of love and concern from all of you.  Your correspondence on the website, your cards (many of you sent multiple cards), food, phone calls, and most importantly your prayers.  I have no doubt that your prayers played the most important role in my recovery to this point.

It has been the most humbling experience of my life that all of you poured out your concern for me.  I will never forget reading the expressions of concern that you sent out on my behalf.  I feel that I have been given a second chance on life,  God has been so very good to me in that He has led the doctors and He has been with me throughout my recovery.  I still have quite a ways to go to get back to the same old Mercer Crook, but with God's help I will get as close as humanly possible.  

I hope all of you know how special you are to me, and I could never repay you for what you have meant to me during this time in my life.  May God bless each of you and keep you safe as you go through your day to day life.  I will never forget your wonderful acts of love.

I would like to add to the thanks and appreciation from my husband. Without all of your support, visits, food, offerings, love and prayers, my family and I would have been hard-pressed to survive the waiting and hoping for Mercer to come back to us. Hey everybody.  Sorry it's been a while since I last posted.  Dad is still making good progress.  A little something gets a little better everyday.  He is already able to bend his knees to over 100 degrees each, as opposed to 40 degress when he first began his therapy at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.  He is also walking very well, using no assistance at all on solid, level ground.  He only uses his cane on uneven ground or when his legs are a little tired.  He was also able to get onto his lawn mower and cut about half of his lawn last week.  It made him feel really good to be able to get just a little closer to back to normal.  We continue to thank each and every one of you for your continued prayers and support.  Before long, he will be the good ole Mercer Crook who used to run around at 100 miles per hour without so much as a break.

And now, for something new.  At Dad's insistence, I would now like to use this website for another purpose.  I would like to invite each and every one of you to the Lakehouse Bar and Grille, 5466 McEver Rd., Flowery Branch, GA  30542, on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 9:00pm, for the debut performances of Back in Time.  YES, we are performing 2 nights in a row!  If you like the beach, rock 'n roll, and soul music of the 60s and 70s, then come out and enjoy the newest horn band in the area.  You will not go away unsatisfied.  And yes, your own Mercer Crook will be behind the keyboard and microphone, playing and singing like never before.  So come on out and step "back in time" for an evening (or 2) of good music and good food at the Lakehouse Bar and Grille in Flowery Branch, GA, on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May15, 2010.  See you there!!

Good morning, everybody.  I hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful weather and is looking forward to spending a wonderful holiday weekend with their family.  Just wanted to let everyone know that dad is still making progress.  He's still walking very well and is using no assistance whatsoever; no canes, no walkers, no nothing!  He visited his surgeon earlier this week, who gave him the clearance to start driving again, so look out everybody!  He's been chomping at the bit to drive for about a month now, so needless to say, he was happy.  He is also back to playing his oboe and will be playing with the Northwinds at this year's Memorial Day Concert at First Baptist Church in Gainesville, beginning at 7pm.  We continue to be so grateful for all of your prayers and support.  We couldn't have gotten through all this without it.

Oh, and one more thing.  Don't forget about next weekend, Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, at the Lakehouse in Flowery Branch.  Back in Time will be there both nights at 9pm for non-stop fun and excitement.  Hope to see all of you there!

Hello everybody.  Sorry it has been a while since I last updated this thing, but alot has been going on.  Back in Time is really beginning to take off.  After playing at The Lakehouse in mid-May, we've also played for Dad's 45th high school reunion, as well as outdoor gigs in Gainesville and Lake Lanier Islands.  And we're hoping for more gigs in the near future.  Dad's progress is still moving right along.  He finished his prescribed physical therapy a few weeks ago, but is still going back voluntarily to continue building up more strength.  He also had his last follow-up appointment with his surgeon early last week.  He will only have to go back if he feels it is necessary.  So hey, no more trips to Atlanta!  Thank you all again for all your prayers and support.  The entire family appreciates it more than you will ever know.

And for all you EHHS Band Alumni:  There is going to be an Alumni Band this fall at East Hall Stadium.  Preliminary information has it on Fri., Oct. 8, 2010.  There are going to be 2-3 rehearsals in the 2 weeks leading up to the game, as well as a reception following one of the rehearsals.  So go ahead and put it on your calendars.  I will try to get up more information on this site as I get it, as well as listing it on Facebook.  So go ahead and start spreading the word to everyone you see.  Let's make this one the biggest one yet!  See you in October.
